The Year is 1989

Brief

You will be given a year of the twentieth century to research. You will find that a number of momentous events took place in the year in question. You need to find out as much information as you can about that year, both written and visual. Explore the key newsworthy events but also as many areas of culture and life at the time such as art, literature, sport, fashion, design, architecture, TV, films, transport, technology, typefaces etc.

You are to create a folded broadsheet that gives a dynamic, informative and entertaining ‘snapshot’ of your year in words and images. The intended audience would be aged 15 upwards. The tone can be serious, or employ humour, or both, as you see fit.

The broadsheet is to be A2 format and should be folded at least three times, but can be more than this if you wish. Remember that these folds are going to form the basis of your layout scheme and grid structure and will affect how the information is delivered to your audience. We need to see evidence that you have experimented with, and tested, various folding schemes. You must include a minimum of 1000 words of body copy and select/use content which allows you to demonstrate a typographic information hierarchy that includes headlines, sub-headings, body copy, captions etc. You can use two colours only for this project but remember that this also gives you a full range of tints of those colours, and overprint effects.

Deliverables:

  • Your broadsheet printed out and mounted as two ‘flats’.

  • A folded dummy of your broadsheet, as well made as possible.

  • Research into your subject year and showing you have looked at a variety of examples of format, typography and contemporary design Development work showing that you have explored format, layout and composition, image treatment, type styling and type hierarchy
